Czech Heritage Foundation
The Czech Heritage Foundation was formed on May 17, 1973, when
merchants of the 16th Avenue SW business district (known today as
Czech Village) were invited to attend a meeting regarding Czech heritage
and cultural preservation in the Cedar Rapids area. As interest in the
project grew, it was obvious that additional groups should be organized
to turn some of the goals into reality. The goals of the foundation are
similar to the ones that exist today: publicity and promotion of events,
developing printed materials, publication of newsletters during the year,
and presenting programs of interest ot the community. It is believed
that approximately 40% of the population still has some level of Czech
ancestry.
Mushrooms!!!
Each year, we attempt to get Morel mushrooms to sell at the festival.
Sometimes they are found local and sometimes we go further North to
昀椀nd them. They are forest mushrooms, not cultivated. They should be
kept refrigerated but NOT in an airtight container. Do not clean them until
you are ready to cook them. Do not eat them raw.
Soak them for 10-15 minutes in salty water to chase out any forest
critters and then clean off any dirt. Cut them in half, lengthwise and
check the insides. Trim the ends off. OK, now you are ready to cook and
eat!
