Czech Village Association
For more than a century, the Czech Village Association has
played a vital role in preserving and advancing one of Cedar Rapids’
longest-standing historical heritage districts. Founded in 1974 by Czech
immigrants and their descendants, the Association emerged from a
shared commitment to protect the cultural roots established when Czech
settlers 昀椀rst arrived in the mid-19th century. Building on a neighborhood
rich with churches, schools, social halls, and businesses, the Association
has helped ensure that Czech Village remains a living re昀氀ection of the
traditions, craftsmanship, and community values that de昀椀ned “Little
Bohemia.” Its work has reinforced Czech Village’s role as both a cultural
cornerstone and a welcoming commercial hub within the city.
Through decades of volunteer leadership, the Czech Village
Association has consistently supported local businesses, residents, and
visitors alike. The organization has promoted commerce, maintained
shared spaces such as parking lots and sidewalks, decorated the district
for holidays, and produced beloved cultural events that celebrate Czech
and Slovak heritage year-round. It supports one of the longest running
festivals called Houby Days. In times of hardship—from historic 昀氀oods to
natural disasters—the Association has stood alongside the community,
helping guide recovery and revitalization efforts. Today, its continued
advocacy and hands-on stewardship ensure that Czech Village
remains not only historically signi昀椀cant, but also vibrant, resilient, and
economically strong for future generations.
